Inaugurating the workshop, Odisha chief secretary Asit Tripathy said Niti Aayog has recognised Odisha as a progressive model State in nutri-cereals. He said Millet Mission has been extended to 72 blocks in 14 tribal districts of the State ever since it was launched in 2017.
Presenting key note address agriculture production commissioner Pradipta Mohapatra said Odisha Millet Mission is an unique initiative for revival and promotion of millet production. The government of India, he added, has recommended other States in the country to follow Odisha model.
Odisha is going to be a lead State in the world in the upcoming International Year of Millet in 2023. The State, which is pioneer in Millet Mission, is aiming at production, consumption and marketing of the nutri-cereals.
The agriculture principal secretary, Sourav Garg, said that around 50,000 farmers in the State have taken up millet cultivation with improved agronomic practice. He said that the State government is planning to include suitable millet in ICDS, MDM and PDS schemes.
The director ICRISAT, Arabinda Padhi, said that the organisation will provide the technology and international best practices for improving productivity in the State.
Padhi, while speaking at the workshop , here on Wednesday, said millet are climate resilient crops and can be grown under stressed rain-fed coditions. People of southern and western Odisha are familiar with millet production over generations.
Country representative of Food & Agriculture Organisation of UNO Tomio Shichari, Principal secretary, cooperation and women and child development, Anu Garg, OUAT vice chancellor Pawan Agarwal, ICAR director Vilas Tonapi, food supply and consumer welfare secretary VV Yadav, CYSD co-founder Jagadananda and director agriculture M Muthukumar also addressed the workshop.
NGO Pragati and Pradan and 14 leading millet farmers of the State were awarded on this occasion.
In his address Tripathy emphasized on taking the Odisha Millets Mission to the next level and how it will benefit the farmers as a whole.
The workshop shall discuss the Odisha model for promotion of millets along with experiences on millet promotion of other state governments as well. Farmers who have taken initiative to adopt improved agronomic practices and participated in other initiatives shall be felicitated during the workshop.
Ragi ‘ladoos’ will also be a part of childrens’ diet in Anganwadi centres. The committee has also proposed to add millets in the mid-day meal in districts covered under district mineral foundation (DMF).
Addressing the Workshop Principal Secretary Agriculture & Farmer’s Empowerment Sourav Garg said, ” Odisha Millet Mission is a unique partnership model wherein the Government, academia and civil society have joined together to implement the programmes through farmer producer organizations.
It is built on a comprehensive approach that includes production, processing, consumption, value addition and marketing. Around 50,000 farmers have been mobilized to take up millet cultivation with improved agronomic practices. State Government has already started procurement of surplus millet from the farmers.
The one day workshop was held in 5 sessions including inaugural and valedictory sessions. Deliberations were held on promotion of seed diversity, policy initiatives, challenges in inclusion of millet in PDS, millet marketing & value chain through framers organizations.
There was also experience sharing sessions among farmers and NGOs on agronomic practices. The national level experts and senior officials namely Mr Tomio Shichiri, Country Representative Food and Agriculture Organization of UNO, Principal Secretary Cooperation Women & Child Development Smt Anu Garg, Dr Pawan Agarwal Vice Chancellor OUAT, Sri Vilas Tonapi Director Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Sri V.V.Yadav, Secretary Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Odisha, Sri Jagadananda co-founder CYSD addressed different sessions.
Director Agriculture Sri M. Muthu Kumar conducted and coordinated various sessions of the Workshop.
On this occasion 14 leading millet farmers from different millet growing districts along with representative of the leading NGOs namely Pragati and Pradhan were awarded by the Chief Secretary and other dignitaries.
