Experts stress organic farming for healthy food

In a workshop held here on Saturday organized by Nirman in collaboration with the Nabakrushna Chaudhury Centre for Development Studies (NCDS), the Odisha Millet Mission (OMM) and the IGSSS, experts laid emphasis on encouraging organic farming and production of minor millets.

The initiative will be launched in nine districts in a phased manner over a period of five years. In order to ensure that people take to consuming millets more due to their high nutritional value, the government of Odisha has decided to introduce millets in the public distribution system (PDS), mid-day meal scheme (MDM) and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) by the end of this year. Mr Soren explained about millet cultivation in Tribal area of Gunupur subdivision. The farmers could enhance their nutrition and socio economic condition through millets cultivation . KBK Administrator cum Additional Chief Secretary and District Collector visited SMI Field areas of Rayagada block

44 villages 362 farmers in 322 acres have cultivated Mandya in SRI Method and Line Transplantation. In Andigiri villages, 19 farmers in 25 acres cultivated in SRI in Mandya. In that villages Lakshmi Nayak, a progressive farmers harvested 13.60 Quintals as per the Crop Cutting Experiment. He has created a record in the mandya production through organic Method. Now market price 27.2 rupees a kilo. This has created waves. Another farmer Hobba Mathil from Claudius podda villages also harvested 11.53 Quintals per acre.
